Forging and Charcoal Making in Grenoside
Saturday 25th October 10.00am to 4.00pm
Dr Roger Doonan and colleagues of Sheffield University using the metal smelted at the Reading Room to forge an item for display in the Reading Room.
Using an open forge worked by drum bellows our blacksmith will be using
many of the techniques originally used in Grenoside, including nail
making, iron forging, and traditional hand forging of blades.
The open forge uses charcoal as used prior to the discovery of coal and
coke in Yorkshire, and much used by the nail makers of Grenoside, as the
temperature can be controlled more effectively for the forging of
smaller items and contains less impurities.
Our charcoal maker will be demonstrating his profession alongside the
blacksmith using modern charcoal making methods.
